I downshifted to a no-frills flip phone last night after about four years of having a smart phone. The effect of no longer having an always-connected distraction device on hand is felt almost immediately. I no longer can fill silences and pauses by checking Twitter or Facebook. Instead I have to look around me and just be there.
It’s a strange feeling, but it’s oddly liberating. I used to feel like I had to check various social media any time I could and would inevitably get frustrated when my junky Droid couldn’t function properly. Now that it’s no longer an option, it’s no longer a duty.
Unfortunately, this change means I need to spend forever importing my contacts into the dumbphone, but all good things come with a price.
